TOUR OF A COMMERCIAL GREENHOUSE

Review the following topics and perhaps print out this form before you go on the trip. Clipboards are helpful here. Each student should gather the suggested information through observations and questions asked during the tour. Upon returning from the tour, the class will collectively present their findings (as a class). A one page typed evlauation will be due one week from the day of the field trip. These evaluations will count for 5 points each.

c) What types of construction were used in the various greenhouses in this range?

d) List advantages and disadvantages of each.

HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEMS

a) What type of heating is used?

b) Could it be improved?

c) What types of summer and winter cooling systems are used?

d) Are the cooling systems adequate and how could they be improved?

SANITATION PRACTICES

a) Would you consider the overall sanitation practices to be adequate?

b) What additional precautions would you suggest to help prevent occurrences of insects and diseases?

AUTOMATION

a) What types of automation are used and are there others that could be implemented?

MARKET SCHEME

a) What market is serviced by this range?

b) What distances do they travel?

c) What equipment is used?

d) What personnel are required?

e) What are their main crops (by season)?

MANAGEMENT STRUCTURE

a) What is the management structure and is it adequate?

b) What was your overall impression of their management skills?

c) What position would you be interested in holding at this company?
