Course Objectives

After completing this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Apply the principles of greenhouse site selection.
  2. Compare and contrast the relative merits and problems associated with the numerous types of greenhouses and be able to select the proper type for their particular needs.
  3. Design the specifications for greenhouse heating, cooling, and air movement systems.
  4. Understand the day to day operations of producing crops in greenhouses, including: substrate selection and preparation; pasteurization of substrates; general greenhouse sanitation; principles and methods of irrigation and fertilization; enrichment of the atmosphere with carbon dioxide; irradiance, photoperiod, and temperature regulation; and chemical regulation of plant growth.
  5. Seek and analyze alternatives and their costs for each aspect of establishing and operating a greenhouse business.
