GETTING STARTED .... FOR THE FEW WHO HAVEN'T BEEN THERE

ENTERING THE WORLD WIDE WEB (WWW)

The WWW is your gateway to computers and the information contained on them all over the world. Using a graphical user interface "Web Browser" such as Netscape you will be able to download programs and files. You will be able to view and print this course's syllabus, background information, procedures, lab demo descriptions, instructions for using computer tutorials, lectures, handouts, etc.

Practice moving around (navigating) with Netscape; find out what tools are available and what they do. The best way is just to try them; you really can't hurt anything.

Another way to move in the WWW is to open a URL. URL stands for "Uniform Resource Locator" (or Universal Resource Label or Link, depending on what source you read). URLs usually begin with HTTP:// For our class, our URL is:

    http://128.192.110.246/pthomas/hs440.web/

http stands for "hyper text transport protocol." In Netscape you can open a URL by clicking once on File (at the top left of your screen) and click once on open location in the pull-down menu. This will take you into the open location window. This is where you type the URL. Try this URL:

Be sure to type it exactly or you will get an error message. The URL will take you to the the Home Page of the Department of Horticultural Science. Here you will find the class website link. The link is located on HTTP://www.uga.edu/%7Ehort/ Once you are there, click on undergarduate programs, then click on classes and scroll down to Hort 4050. Click on the link and you are here. Obviously, using the direct address is quicker, but if you forget, or happen to be on the beach in Fort Lauderdale Fla., studying for the final using your laptop and satellite ISP, you can access it this way.

To exit the WWW click on File in the upper left corner of the screen, and then click on Quit in the pull-down menu. When you are done using the computer, click on Special at the top of the screen and then click on log out in the pull-down menu.
