TextBook: None Required - Materials will be provided in class and on the website
Lab Fee: $20.00 per person
 
Attendance and Participation:
Prepared and active participation is expected for every lecture and lab and also participation in the spring plant sale event.
Five unexcused absences will trigger instructor-initiated withdrawal.
 
Assignments:
Written assignments given and graded
 
How-To Lesson:
Prepare and present a "How - To Lesson". Five to ten minute lecture/demonstration with powerpoint along with a short lab activity.
 
Plant Identification Weekly Quiz:
Each Monday five new plants will be presented from the FFA Floriculture CDE list. Each Friday student will have to identify plants by common and scientific name along with a couple of reflection questions from the week's lecture topics. Selection of plants for weekly quiz will encompass new and past plants up to 10 per week.
 
Plant Identification Log:
Collection of photo and recording of identification characteristics and growth habits of each plant presented in weekly identification.
 
Special Event Participation:
Participation in two of the below events: A refelection summary is expected within one week of the event.
1. January 24th, Jr. GGIA Certification, Classic Center, Athens 2-4 p.m.
2. February 16th -Regional Plant Order, ALEC Greenhouse TBA.
3. February 18th : Regional Plant Order, ALEC Greenhouse 3 - 5 p.m.
4. February 27th - North Region Floriculture CDE, Gwinnett Tech 4 -6 pm
5. March 15th - State Horticulture CDE, FFA Center 8 -10 am
6. April 25th - State FFA Convention, Macon
 
Horticulture SAE:
Supervised Agriculture Experience program allows students to gain real world experience in the activities of the horticulture industry while building skills in organization, recordkeeping, decision-making and analysis. The program is designed by the individual student with assistance from industry mentors and is completed outside regular class time.
 
Proficiency Application:
Complete a proficiency application related to select SAE. Proficiency will be judged by Agriculture Education state staff and an award presented for highest scoring proficiency.
 
Midterm and Final Exam:
You will be given two fairly short exams durinmg thsi course. Each will be an exam that will require you to think through what you have learned in class and in lab.
 
The mid-term exam will be a take home format with reflection questions of subjects covered to date. Exam answers should be typed, single space and turned in at the beginning of the class date assigned. As this is a take home exam, no makeup exams will be offered.
 
The final exam will be held as per the University Final Exam Schedule. It will cover skills and a written examination.
 
Academic Honesty Policy:
All academic work must meet the standards contained in UGA's "A Culture of Honesty". Each student is responsible to inform themselves about those standards before performing any academic work. (Personal note: Dr. Hamlin and I have a great respect for teachers, and a greater abhorrance of cheating. As this is a teacher-training course, we will assume you also have similar, strong feelings about supporting academic honesty).

Quizzes:
Plant ID Quizzes will be given every Friday class lecture session. Quizzes will simpy be the identification of 5 specimens brough to class, or housed in the greehouse. You are expected to know the scientific name, spelled correctly, know at least one common name. No makeup quizzes will be given, but students do get to drop their lowest quiz score prior to final grade averaging.
 
Makeup Quizzes:
There will be no makeup exams given, unless you notify us before (you may use voice mail and e-mail communications options which are available 24 hours a day;). I understand that emergency situations may not allow prior notification by students) the exam and explain why you cannot take the exam when scheduled; and you provide proper documentation for your absence
 
Assignment Deadline Policy:
Late assignments (excluding assignments due to excused absences) will be assessed a 10% penalty during the first 24 hours following the deadline, 20% during the second 24 hour period, 30% during the third 24 hour period, etc. It is in your best interest to submit a completed assignment prior to its deadline.
